Woodridge Park District Commissioner Jack Mahoney Celebrates Milestone Anniversary

Jack Mahoney is celebrating an incredible 40 years as a commissioner for the Woodridge Park District, the longest tenure in the District’s 55-year history.

Commissioner Mahoney first got involved with the Park District in 1973 when he moved to Woodridge, just 4 years after the District was established. He initially attended meetings to advocate for improvements to the youth baseball program, but soon recognized the full scope of the Park District’s mission.

Over the past four decades, Jack has been instrumental in the District’s growth and development. Under his leadership, the park system expanded from 240 acres to 670 acres, including the addition of 32 parks, an athletic recreation center, a family aquatic park, and more.

Commissioner Mahoney has also championed environmental stewardship and collaborative partnerships with the Village and School District, resulting in multiple awards for intergovernmental cooperation.

“Jack’s vision and unwavering commitment have been vital in making Woodridge a thriving community for families and nature,” said Park District Executive Director Jenny Knitter. “His legacy will be felt for generations.”

Commissioner Mahoney’s milestone anniversary was celebrated throughout the month of October. On October 17th, Jack was honored by his family, fellow board members and Park District and Village staff at the 83rd Street Park Shelter, which was named “Mahoney’s Pavilion” in his honor. The next day, the Village of Woodridge declared October 18th “Jack Mahoney Day”. Furthermore, Jack was recognized at the Illinois Association of Park District’s Best of the Best Gala on October 25, where he received an award and a standing ovation from his industry peers, his wife Phyllis and his Park District family.
