Freedom of Information Act

Municipal Directory & Freedom of Information Act Manual
To review a record, requests must be submitted in writing via personal delivery, mail, or email. The request must specify the type of document(s) requested and if it is for commercial purposes. In compliance with the state statute, Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140/1 et. Seq.), for general requests, responses will be provided 5 business days after the request is received. For business requests, responses will be provided 21 business days after the request is received.

SUBMISSION PROCESS:
The formal system for processing FOIA requests includes the following:

  • Requester submits a written FOIA request to FOIA Officer or Deputy FOIA Officer listed below.
  • Upon receipt of a FOIA request, a trained FOIA Officer will respond to the Requester indicating that the request was received and that staff will begin working to meet the request.
  • Once staff begins compiling the requested information, if additional questions exist, a FOIA Officer may reach out to clarify the request. If the request is overly burdensome for District staff to compile, staff may reach out to the Requester to narrow the request and/or request an extension to provide the information.
  • Upon completion of the FOIA request, a FOIA Officer will provide written documentation and requested information defined in the request.

FEES:

  • Fees are not charged for the first fifty pages of standard black and white copies. After the first 50 pages, the fee for black and white copies is $0.15 per page unless the actual reproduction costs (for color or oversized copies, for example) are higher. A fee equal to the actual cost may be charged for such copies.
